First off- I apologize for not posting for a while. I had too many words streaming through my head for various projects that I accidentally my blog to gather dust! But, alas, I am back. (With two new books under my belt!)
This post is about various web articles I have seen as of late saying things like "Why you're main character is wrong!" "What Most Writers get WRONG." "How NOT to write." and so forth. Well here's where I have a problem, how dare you tell someone that they are not writing correctly. You may just be trying to help writers reach their full potential, but by telling us that we are doing something wrong in our writing process are you not in a way trying to conform our writing styles? Giving helpful tips is one thing, saying that one is writing wrong is not only rude, but it is far from an accurate statement. Do you think John Green and say, J.K Rawlings have the same writing style? Tim Dorsey and Maggie Stiefvater? I think not. People tend to write how it comes naturally to them. Some prefer pen and paper over keyboard and screen. Regardless of our methods, no one is wrong, no matter the method of writing I fear that editing always comes into play, so whatever method of writing you fancy, do that. If you pour over your work until you are satisfied, or if you have a word count that is %100 your choice, if you just write when inspiration strikes that is also purely up to you. You do your thing. You are the only person who gets to tell you how to write.
I guess the reason this whole thing has infuriated me so is because it kind of belittles someone. If you were looking for a bit of inspiration on Pinterest just to give an example and stumbled upon an article that told you that your work is written wrong, wouldn't that chisel a bit of your confidence away? Confidence in what you are writing is crucial.
I'm not even sure if I am making sense.
Well, I am being told to go to bed, so I shall do just that...
Good-bye, and goodnight.
